Rachel Belle Powell Reeves
Faces of Woolsey (and nearby Inman)
Rachel Belle Powell Reeves was born on August 22, 1884 and died on November 10, 1962. Her parents, Thomas Franklin Powell and Martha Frances “Molly” Pollard Powell, raised her in a small town Brooks, Georgia, in Fayette County, Georgia. Rachel was also an organist often playing at events like the Fayette County Singing Convention. Rachel had a passion for gardening, art, and crocheting. She could often be found creating intricate designs and patterns with her crochet hook or spending hours in her garden.
Rachel and her husband Coley moved to Inman (less than 2 miles from Woolsey) in 1921. The couple had two sons, Grey and Frank. Church was an important part of Rachel’s life, and she attended Liberty Chapel Church in Inman.
Inman was also the place where Rachel painted a series of paintings called The Four Seasons which were a visual representation of the different seasons, which Rachel hung over the fireplace. They became cherished family heirlooms, symbolizing the passage of time and the beauty of nature.
Rachel was not just a talented artist, gardener, and crocheter, but she was also a loving grandmother. One of her grandchildren, Walter, could not pronounce “grandmother,” and that's how she came to be called “Bubber.”
Rachel Powell Reeves was a multifaceted woman, passionate about gardening, crochet, art, and her family. Her final resting place, along side her husband, is Historic Woolsey Cemetery in Woolsey, Georgia.
