Our Story and Our Preservation Journey
The concept of our nonprofit originated in November 2019 when a group of Dr. Woolsey’s descendants met with Woolsey Baptist Church's leadership team in Fayetteville, Georgia. Dr. Woolsey’s wishes specified that if the church no longer used the historic church, it would revert to his descendants. Subsequently, the descendants and community members formed Friends of Historic Woolsey to restore the historic church, cemetery, and other properties in and around Woolsey, Georgia.
Our first project focuses on restoring and rehabilitating the Historic Woolsey Church and its Annex, bringing both buildings back into active community service. These long-neglected structures sit at the heart of town, and their renewal will significantly enhance Woolsey’s character and overall appearance. As we continue to discover additional historic photographs and documents, elements of the restoration plan may evolve to ensure we preserve the church’s story with accuracy and respect.
Once restored, the church will once again serve as a welcoming gathering space, supporting community, social, educational, civic, literary, and cultural arts events and programs. Its impact will reach beyond Woolsey, benefiting both residents of and visitors to Fayette County, neighboring communities, and people from across Georgia.Volunteers are an essential part of this project. Their dedication, energy, and unique skills will directly shape the restoration and help bring the church back to life. Opportunities include assisting with research, supporting community events, participating in grounds maintenance, and contributing specialized expertise. Each volunteer’s contribution, no matter the size, enriches the project and strengthens the sense of shared ownership, pride, and connection within the community.
