Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. maintains Historic Woolsey Cemetery as a peaceful resting place for departed loved ones. Visitors, lot owners, and grantees must adhere to the policies, regardless of when a lot was purchased. Thank you for helping keep the cemetery safe, respectful, and beautiful.
I. Conduct & Access
● Location & Hours: 242 Hampton Rd, Fayetteville, GA 30215. Open only during daylight hours. ● Conduct: Visitors must observe proper decorum on the grounds of the church and cemetery. ● Parking: Cars may be parked in the designated parking areas at the Historic Woolsey Church.No vehicles are allowed on the cemetery grounds.
● Animals: Pets and livestock are not permitted, except service dogs for the visually impaired.
II. Burials
● Payment: Plots must be paid for in full before remains are interred.
● Interments: Only human remains may be buried in the cemetery; no pet burials allowed. ● Vaults & Caskets: Vaults/concrete liners are required for all burials. Caskets must be made of structurally sound material.
● Cremations: Cremations require a permanent urn or urn vault. Urns must be made of material that can be sealed. The scattering of cremated remains in the cemetery is prohibited. ● Disinterment/Exhumation: If remains must be removed from the cemetery, the removal must comply with state/local laws and be scheduled with Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. The requestor must provide proof of the burial rights of the deceased.
III. Headstones & Markers
● Requirement: All graves must have a permanent marker/headstone within six months of interment, showing the name, birth date, and death date.
● Temporary Markers: The funeral home shall place the marker immediately following the burial. ● Ownership & Maintenance: Headstones are the property of the responsible heirs; upkeep is their responsibility. No historic markers may be removed from the cemetery.
● Size & Placement: A headstone or marker must be on a concrete base. The marker must fit within lot boundaries so that it will not interfere with future burials.
● Cremation Markers: Up to two cremated bodies may be buried in one plot; one double marker or two single markers are the maximum allowed per plot.
● Inscriptions: Engravings on the headstone must include, but are not limited to, the deceased’s name and dates; inappropriate markers will be removed at the owner’s expense.
IV. Decorations & Flowers
● New Graves: Family members should remove flowers and personal keepsakes within ten days of interment. After that time, remaining items may be removed without notice. ● Floral Decorations: Flowers must be secured in containers or attached to markers. Decorations that interfere with lawn maintenance or have become faded or unsightly will be removed.
● Prohibited Items: No statues, lawn ornaments, or fence decorations are permitted in the cemetery. Benches are prohibited unless approved by Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. which reserves the right to designate placement of benches. Approved benches donated to the cemetery must be granite or marble.
● Planting: Grass or sod allowed; other plants, including trees, shrubs, and flowers, will be removed.
V. Burial Rights & Lot Information
● Grave Lots: A standard lot accommodates one casket or two cremations.
● Ownership: Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. retains title to the cemetery property; burial rights are permissive.
VI. Resale, Transfer, or Assignment
● Transfer: Burial rights may be sold or transferred to another person with approval from Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc., if the plot has been paid for in full.
● Inheritance: Ownership passes to heirs/descendants of the Purchaser according to state law. ● Division: The subdivision of interment rights is not allowed.
● Designations: Owners may designate in writing who may or may not be buried in their lot. A notarized notice should be sent to Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc.
● Power of Attorney: Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. must receive a copy of the Power of Attorney order for it to become operative.
● Resale: Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. does not repurchase unused/unwanted plots; no advertising of plots for sale is allowed on Cemetery or Church property.
● Cemetery Deeds: No transfer or assignment of any plot shall be valid until evidence thereof is provided to the Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. and the change of Ownership is recorded in the cemetery records. There is a recording fee of $25 for changes to a deed.
VII. Miscellaneous Policies
● Supervision: All work (interment, disinterment, landscaping, marker placement, etc.) must be approved by Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc.
● Contractors: Any private contractors or workers must contact Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. before starting work. Work must cease while a funeral or interment is conducted. ● Grounds Use: The cemetery welcomes walkers to the grounds. No peddling, soliciting, alcohol, drugs, or firearms (except military escort or memorial services) are allowed on the grounds. ● Liability: Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. is not responsible for damage to personal property.
VIII. Disclaimer
● Records may be incomplete due to the age of the cemetery and prior record keeping. Please contact Friends of Historic Woolsey, Inc. to correct inaccurate information.
● All burials must be approved in advance of interment. Unauthorized placement of remains is illegal and prohibited.
