Raising the Roof Again: Woolsey’s Story Continues

Picture a thriving small town in 1888, alive with purpose and promise. Woolsey was growing, bustling with activity and pride. The town had a train depot, school, bank, post office, jail, millinery, blacksmith shop, cotton gin, peach packing plant, doctor’s office, lumber business, general store, and at its heart, a church.
Trains from the Atlanta-Hawkinsville Railroad carried cotton, peaches, and other crops north to Atlanta, connecting this rural community to a wider world. Even President Franklin D. Roosevelt would later pass through Woolsey on his journeys to Warm Springs, a reminder that this little town was part of something bigger.
And in the midst of that growth, a new church was being built. You can imagine the excitement as neighbors gathered, watching as a cedar shake roof was carefully placed on top, marking not just the completion of a building, but the beginning of generations of faith, fellowship, and community.
Now, 137 years later, that same spirit is alive again.
Once more, Woolsey is coming together with excitement and purpose. A new cedar shake roof is being placed on Historic Woolsey Church, echoing the pride and hope of those who stood here so many years ago.
